Energy Star heroes
Dec 16, 2013
Recently, the Wall Street Journal named Sears Canada as the Energy Star Retailer of the year. How did Sears become an Energy Star hero? By “empowering customers to reduce their energy use” through the offering of multiple energy-saving products. One of the key reasons Sears is an Energy Star hero is that the company is on track to reduce its carbon footprint by 50% in the year 2020.
Another Energy Star hero is the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany. The base is one of two federal facilities recognized for having highly efficient systems that reduce the use of electricity and reduce carbon pollution. One way the base became recognized for its Energy Star efforts is the use of a landfill generator that captures methane gas to create renewable energy. The base is also working towards meeting the Secretary of the Navy’s mandate to have military bases achieve zero net energy consumption by 2020. This is in addition to having zero carbon emissions by 2020.
CalPortland Rillito Cement Plant is also an Energy Star hero. The plant performs in the top 25 percent of similar facilities for energy efficiency and also meets the strict energy efficiency performance levels that are set by the Environmental Protection Agency. The plant achieved its Energy Star certification following the implementation of an Energy Management program, installation of a kiln expert control system, and installation of a new gas conditioning tower. Not only did the plant become a leader in energy standards, but it also reduced its energy costs, leading to increased ROI.
